BRAKE SYSTEM BREAK-IN

ENSURE OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE

Breaking in your new brakes is the first step to making sure they perform the way they should. The process, known as bedding, allows the pads and rotors to form a proper contact surface. This improves braking response, reduces noise, and extends the life of your components. It only takes a short time but has a lasting impact on safety and reliability.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SKIP THE BREAK-IN?

Skipping the break-in process might not seem like a big deal—until it is. Without proper bedding, your brakes may feel weak or inconsistent. You also risk damaging your new parts before they’ve had a chance to seat properly.

Common issues include:

  • Uneven pad and rotor wear
  • Vibration or noise during braking
  • Reduced stopping performance, especially under load or heat

THE BENEFITS OF DOING IT RIGHT

A properly bedded brake system delivers better results from the start. You'll notice smoother stops, less noise, and more consistent pedal feel.

Benefits include:

  • Stronger, more consistent braking response
  • Quieter operation with less vibration
  • Longer life for both pads and rotors

Taking the time now prevents problems later.

BEFORE YOU START: QUICK TIPS

A successful break-in begins with proper preparation. Before starting the process, double-check that your brake parts are securely installed. Find a safe, open area with little traffic, and avoid sudden stops until the process is complete. The full process takes about 30–40 minutes.

It’s normal to notice light smoke or odor during break-in, but if you hear grinding or feel pulling, pause and inspect. A quick check now can prevent issues and help your brakes perform their best from day one.

STEP-BY-STEP BREAK-IN PROCEDURE

Step 1

Find a Safe Area

Find a safe and open space where you can accelerate and brake repeatedly without traffic or interruptions.

Step 2

Initial Aggressive Stops

Accelerate to 35 mph (55 km/h) and brake firmly to 5 mph (8 km/h) without stopping or cooling. Repeat this six times.

Step 3

Moderate Stops

Repeat the process with moderate braking instead of aggressive stops. Again, do not stop or let the brakes cool. Repeat six times.

Step 4

Cool Down Drive

Drive for 6–8 minutes at a steady speed without using the brakes heavily or coming to a full stop. Add 3 minutes for Performance and Comfort Series rotors.

Step 5

Final Cool Down

Park the vehicle and allow the brakes to cool naturally for about 30 minutes. Avoid pressing the brake pedal during this time.

Step 6

Completion

The break-in is now complete. You should now experience smoother stops, reduced noise, and more consistent braking feel.
